摘要 <p>A very large crankshaft, which would deflect under its own weight is machined in the following way: the crankshaft blank is supported in clamping jaws (41,42,43) at various points along its length in the machine tool. The machine tool has a rotating cutter (2) mounted on a slide (10) which begins at one end of the frame (12) and machines the bearing areas in succession. As each bearing area is machined, additional clamping supports (45,46,47) are moved into place behind the cutter (2) to support the crankshaft on the newly machined bearing areas. This process continues until the cutter reaches the other end of the crankshaft, when the entire shaft is firmly clamped.</p>
