Abrasive granules based on Al2O3 and, if appropriate, also other metal oxides, including, in major proportions, especially ZrO2, are produced by fusing the oxides, pouring the oxide melt into a salt melt, allowing the whole to solidify, separating off the salt and further processing the resulting hard metal oxide phase to give abrasive grain. This gives harder abrasive grains without stress cracks and with improved grain toughness.
