CONSUMABLE REPLACEABLE ANODES FOR BATTERIES

Battery comprises an inert container housing a number of hollow box-like cathode elements and consumable metal anode elements in spaced relationship. The cathode elements have a gas-permeable porous cathode forming a substantial part of one wall, the opposite wall being impervious and carrying a removable consumable metal anode which can be removed from and reinserted into the container. The anodes and cathodes of adjacent elements face each other. An electrolyte is situated between the anodes and cathodes of adjacent elements, and a depolarising gas is fed to the interior of the box-like element to the porous cathode. PPtd. material is collected below the anodes and cathodes. Means are provided for connecting the electrodes to an external load. The construction allows easy withdrawal and replacement of spent anode plates.
