A two motor arrangement giving two output speeds comprises an axial motor 1 having a slidable rotor 2 coupled directly through a shaft 3 to an output pulley 4, and through a clutch lining 15 to another pulley 10, beltdriven from a second motor 22 which need not be of the axial type. Energization of the stator 7 attracts the rotor 2 downwards against a thrust pad 16 and a ball race 18, freeing the clutch 14, 15 and allowing the pulley to idle. On de-energizing the motor 1 the clutch is re-engaged by a spring 17 hence energization of the motor 22 drives the pulley 4. Another arrangement is described whereby the motor 22 can drive an output shaft to a worm and wheel reduction gear where a speed ratio of more than 15 : 1 is required.
