<p>The hydraulic torque converter (10) connects co-axial output (17) and input (15) shafts of a heavy vehicle drive transmission. It has a brake which acts on the revolving converter housing. The converter uses impulse (14) and turbine (16) wheels fixed to the input (15) and output (17) shafts respectively. The housing (13) is built onto the wheel (16). A circumferential brake track (22) is provided on the housing barrel, with fixed supports at intervals locating radially displaceable brake pads (23). Offset plates (24) on the shaft tangents locate angle irons (25) which guide a pad, also providing threaded holes (30) for studs (28) securing an electro-magnetic actuator. Bolts (34) screw into the studs (29) to locate a back plate (36) and an oscillating armature plate (38) with a fixed breech (37). Coil springs (40) apply the pad (23) with electromagnetic release.</p> |
