Such a sewing unit is composed of a sewing needle (1) and a piece of thread (5) connected to said needle (1). At the shaft end (2) of the sewing needle (1) there is provided a support surface (3), which is recessed relative to the shaft cross-section and is open toward the shaft circumference, on which support surface the beginning (4) of the thread is firmly fixed with a binding agent. The simple, lateral application of the beginning (4) of the thread onto the needle (1) creates the prerequisite for a reliable connection of the needle (1) with the piece of thread (5) on mass production of the sewing unit (1). <IMAGE>
