The flyer for guiding the spun thread to the spool, or the spool itself, is provided with a flange in the form of a disc by which it can be driven directly from the flywheel of a spinning wheel. The axis of the spool is near enough vertical to the axis of the flywheel. The flyer also may have a dishlike flange and it has a hole for the thread and a metal hook aligned to its axis of rotation. The design reduces considerably the dimensions of a spinning wheel for handicraft work.
