Title solns. were concentrated byeleclrolysis of aq. birnes using cation-exchanging membranes. thus, a brine was electrolyzed using a cation-exchanging membrane whichon its cathode side had carbonic acid groups and serving as the basic polymer was a fluorocarbon with lateral sulfonic acid groups. The C.D. was 55 A/dm2, the potential 4.71 V, and with a 25% NaOH soln. as catholyte the current efficiency was 90%. The soln. was concd. through a series of heat exchangers. A 50% aq. NaOH soln. was obtained at a rate of 15 t/h.
