[Also in Division G1] A vehicle for use in determining the coefficient of friction between a vehicle wheel and a surface comprises a pair of supporting wheels rotatably mounted on axles 11, 12. The axles are pivotally mounted on beams 7, 8 by king pins 39, 34, the beam 8 being pivoted at 10 to a member 9 attached to a towing ring 4 whilst the beam 7 is fixed to the member 9. A turnbuckle prevents excess relative movement of the beams and a turnbuckle 35 adjusts the " toeout " of the wheel on the axle 12. An arm 42 pivoted at 43 has a recess 41 in which a bolt 40, screwed into the axle 11, is located to hold the wheel in its " toe-out " position but rotation of a lever 48 about its pivot 49 causes a pin 45 to pull the arm 42 away from the bolt. The bolt may then be located in a recess 51 in the arm so that the axle 11 is parallel to the axle 12. |
