Coating agents for pharmaceuticals, for example, are present as an aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble polymer which is prepared by dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent which is not miscible with water, emulsifying this organic solution in water, where appropriate using auxiliary substances, and expelling the organic solvent from the system in order to form a colloidal or almost colloidal aqueous dispersion or latex of small, uniform polymer particles which are applied to pharmaceutical dosage units from latexes having a high solids content. Such latexes, which exhibit good resistance to bacterial and fungal growth, are, when they are combined with suitable selected additives, convenient and attractive coating agents which impart, to pharmaceutical dosage units, for example, outstanding protection and a broad spectrum of properties with regard to release of the contents. |
