The back-up conveyor belt has the function, when a unit (palette) is removed, of pushing onward all the following units without contact and without impact pressure. Each belt section of the back-up conveyor belt is provided with a coupling device (5b) which has two spring band couplings (6b-7b) which can couple a drive sprocket (8) to the drive shaft (4) of the chain conveyor (3). A contact lever arranged in the movement zone of the unit acts, when actuated, both on a spring band coupling (6b) of the associated belt section and on the spring band coupling of the belt section lying in front thereof. In this manner, each unit is automatically moved forward as soon as the preceding one is drawn away. <IMAGE>
