In a prestressed, post-tensioned concrete road or like surfacing consisting of a series of slab sections (3) separated by transverse expansion joints, essentially all the longitudinal prestressing members (11) of each cast in situ section are tensioned by means of hydraulic cylinder apparatus (16) fitting into the joint gaps and bearing against one of the end faces of the at least partially hardened section, and said members are held in tension by anachor means embedded close to the end faces of the section.
