The mechanism loads a magazine with cigarettes and similarly-shaped tobacco articles from containers delivered in succession, having two or more holders for the containers on a rotary support above the magazine. These transfer the full containers from a first station to the magazine, and empty ones from the latter to a second one. The holders (1, 2) pivot by means of links (7, 11) on opposite sides of the support (6). An intermittently-driven control disc (13) acts against rollers (16, 17) on the links, having a cam (14), superimposing an additional movement on the links to that of the support. This accurately positions a full container (3) on the magazine, and removes it when empty to the first station.
