Safety link for impact absorbing steering column - includes splined sliding coupling to isolate steering wheel from column during crash

An impact absorbing steering wheel is coupled to the steering column with a failsafe link. This link disconnects the wheel from the column in the first phase of the impact. This has the effect of isolating the steering wheel from violent wheel deflections in a serious crash and greatly reduces injury. The safety coupling has a sleeve connector with inner splines to fit over a splined ring on the steering column. Axial force above a set value pushes the splines apart and frees the wheel. The wheel is also fitted with impact absorbing mountings and padding.
