The safety mechanism is for a builder's hoist or similar lifting mechanism, having a vertical mast on which a platform travels up and down, coupled to a hoist rope. It comprises a bar mounted on the platform, coupled to the rope and movable on a component fixed to the platform in opposition to a spring. If the rope breaks or goes slack, the free end of the bar acts against a rotary member on the platform, jamming it against the mast and locking the platform.
