The invention relates to hollow bricks consisting of fired clay and having an uneven number of offset rows (5) which contain large chambers (1), with a rectangular cross-section and a length of at least 70 mm, and part-chambers being essentially half the length of a large chamber (1). In each outermost row (5') of said hollow bricks, at least one end chamber is formed by a part-chamber (2'). The transverse web (6') separating the part-chamber (2') from the adjoining large chamber (1) reinforces the corner region, with the result that the hollow bricks can be extruded without damage. Preferably, part-chambers (2'') of the third to (n - 2)th row (5'') are open towards the abutting surfaces of the hollow brick (20), with the result that the heat-flow path through the brick grid also approximately corresponds, in the butt-joint region, to that in the central region. Horizontal extrusion is permitted by the simultaneous extrusion of a transportation sub-layer which consists of clay and on which the green bricks cut from the extrudate remain, at least until they achieve an inherent strength which permits further, problem-free handling. <IMAGE>
