The torque converter comprises friction elements which are rotatable about an axis, at an angle to the main axis. The axis of rotation is pivotable abut a pivot axis and the produced part of this pivot axis intersects that of the axis of rotation in or near the main axis. During operation, the element may be in contact with a fixed surface. The element may be in linear contact with a fixed surface. The produced part of this contact line may intersect or nearly intersect the axis of rotation.
