<p>Oxygen difluoride prodn. - continuously from fluorine and dilute alkali hydroxide, used as oxidant in rocketry. Continuous prodn. of OF 2 by reacting F2 with precooled 1-3 wt. % alkali hydroxide soln. is carried out in apparatus fitted with cooler to keep temp. at 5-18 degrees C, using aqs. soln. with 1.3-2.8 wt. % alkali hydroxide content and F2 residence time in this soln. of 1-10 sec., so that vol. ratio of F2 and soln. is 1:1 to 8:1. Gaseous product is removed, OF 2 is recovered and spent alkali is removed continuously from reaction vessel. Product is useful as high energy oxidant in rocketry, being easier to handle than liquid F2/O2 mixture, whilst giving similarly good specific impulse with kerosene-type fuels. Process uses relatively little alkali hydroxide soln., which can be regenerated and recycled. Good OF 2 yields are attained at high F2 throughput.</p> |
