Neutralising aq. raffinate for reuse of water in uranium winning - by adding lime, oxidising by introducing air and filtering to remove impurities (OE 15.11.79)

The raffinate is first treated at 15-80 degrees C with a slight excess of lime to obtain a pH of 9-10; and then air is injected into the raffinate to oxidise divalent iron and manganese. The water is sepd. from the resulting ppte. and is reused in the treatment of ore. The raffinate is obtd. e.g. in the treatment of silicate ores contg. U, which are crushed and leached with H2SO4 and an oxidant. The U soln. is treated to remove U, leaving a raffinate contg. impurities; and the invention purifies the aq. raffinate so it can be reused.
