New hindered phenol derivs. (I) comprise 1-4 3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyphenylalkyl gps. bonded to the C atoms of an organic radical via oxycarbonyl or carbamoyl bridges. Cpds. (I) are useful as antioxidants for organic materials such as polymers (esp. polyolefins), oils, fats and waxes. Cpds. (I) are pref. of formula (Ia) (where R and R1 are 1-8C alkyl, at least one being tert. alkyl; Z is O or NH; n=1-4, x = 2 or 3; R2 is a 1-20C opt. unsatd. aliphatic gp. an aromatic gp. phenylalkyl, alkylphenyl, A-S-A, N/(CH2)p/3 or 1,1'-carbonylbis (3,4-phenylene, where A is 2-6C alkylene and p=2 or 3).
