<p>The lever-ratchet (14) actuated screw-jack mechanism effects the automatic adjustment of a drum brake for an automobile utilising handbrake lever (9) movements to displace the lever (14), and effecting diametric shoe (4) divergence to compensate for wear of the brake linings (3). Acting wholly as a strut, the screw jack comprises a threaded shaft (7) part penetrating a co-axial hollow shaft (6), penetration being governed by a nut (8) with external gear teeth (8a). An axle pin which (11) secures the threaded shaft (7) to the brake lever (14) and a counter lever of which the free ends clamp the nut. The brake lever and the screw jack act as an elbow strut effecting shoe (4) expansion as the brake lever pivots, the ratchet lever simultaneously rotating the nut if excessive play exists.</p> |
