The drill stand has a holder which can be fixed at any required height on a rack column. A hand crank-operated pinion engages the rack, the holder having a pair of clamp jaws adjustably fitted around the rack. The holder has a housing defined by two shells (16, 17) which in their central area (18, 19), are rigidly clamped together. Their forward area constitutes the pair of jaws (21, 22) for holding the drill.
