Penicillanic acid derivs. of formula (I) are new (where n is 1-11). (I) can be prepd. by reacting a N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of formula (II) with a penicillanic acid deriv. of formula (III). Reaction is pref. at 0 degree C in borate buffer of pH 8.5. (I) are strong antibiotics. (I) in which >=1 of the H atoms in the CH2 gps. have been replaced by tritium can also be used in scientific investigations of the effect of penicillins on bacteria.
