Provided in the case of the present manual measuring device, which is constructed as a sliding vernier, are an incremental scale (3), a read-off unit (6) for the contactless, photoelectric or inductive scanning of this scale, and an electronic counting or displaying unit connected to the read-off unit (6), the read-off unit (6) and scale (3) being mutually adjustable by means of a detecting element (5, 10). In order to achieve an enhancement of the setting accuracy and measurement accuracy with the aid of simple means, and above all to exclude any possible influence of unequally strong pressure forces or operating forces on the measurement result, the detecting element (10) is simultaneously constructed as a sensor, which can be actuated by being placed onto the workpiece, of a stop switch (15) which when the sensor responds stops the counting or display unit. The manual measuring device can also be constructed as a dial gauge or sensing-lever probe. <IMAGE>
