PURPOSE:To obtain graphite fibers, excellent in electric conductivity, stability to the air and heat and suitable for utilization in composite materials, by bringing graphite fibers prepared by graphitizing vapor-grown carbon fibers into contact with bromine under specific conditions and forming a specific crystal structure. CONSTITUTION:A hydrocarbon compound, such as benzene or naphthalene, is brought into contact with a substrate carrying an ultrafine particulate metallic catalyst, such as iron, nickel or iron-nickel alloy, to provide vapor-grown carbon fibers, which are then graphitized to afford graphite fibers having carbon hexagonal network surface oriented parallel to the fiber axis direction and in the form of annual rings. The resultant carbon fibers are then brought into contact with bromine at <=50 deg.C temperature for >=10min to form graphite fibers containing crystals mixed within the range of 10-40Angstrom repeating period in the C-axis direction. |
