The machine sorts out damaged rectangular blocks, particularly of aerated concrete, from a stack, using stacking tongs lifted and lowered on a portal-ype frame and whose jaws have parallel horizontal rails gripping the lower-most block layer. A lifting slide (5) works in vertical guides (4) in the frame (1), and on it a centring slide (11) with the tongs (14) travels freely in the horizontal direction, being lockable to the lifting slide. The tongs are either mounted rigidly on the centring slide and slew with it freely in relation to the lifting slide and are lockable to it, or slew freely on and are lockable to the centring slide.
