<p>PURPOSE:The oxidation of a glycol with an oxygen-containing gas is conducted in the presence of a platinum or palladium catalyst incorporated with a specific compound, thus producing glycolic acid using a high active and low-cost catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A glycol is oxidized with an oxygen-containing gas in an aqueous solution to a carboxylic acid, wherein a catalyst of platinum and/or palladium containing lead or a lead compound is employed. For example, ethylene glycol is converted to hydroxyacetic acid.</p> |
