In-line fuel pump for IC engine - has followers guided by flattened sides to reduce space requirement and prevent rotation

The pump has a row of cylinders with spring loaded plungers (7) reciprocating in them. A camshaft (2) moves followers (3) which raise the plungers against the springs. Each follower has a cylindrical fork (5) with a pin (4) through it which carries a roller (3) running on the cam. The axial sides of the forks are flattened and the flat sides of adjacent forks run on each other. The diameter of the unflattened part of the fork is greater than the axial distance between cylinder centrelines. This prevents rotation of the followers and permits ample follower dimensions in a small total space.
