Nail driving tool safety device for mining operations - has resilient hood on nose of tool, isolating sparks from explosive atmosphere

The nail driving tool for installing ducting or other ventilation equipment in main galleries, uses an accessory designed to prevent sparks due to contact between the nail (7) and the rock face (11) from causing an explosion. The accessory is a resilient hood (1) with a bellows portion (9) enclosing the contact region. A boss (4) supported inside the bellows forms a sleeve (2) which fits over the end of the nail driver (3). This has a hole (6) through the end face (5) to allow the nail to pass through. This end face is held in contact with the rock face by compression of the bellows and the point of the nail is enclosed even during recoil of the end of the nail driver.
