In order to be able to display both target acquisition on a rectangular field of view as well as the target identification, the aiming process and the target tracking of missiles on a circular, considerably smaller field of view, the received thermal image is scanned alternately in a raster and polar manner (2, 3, 4, 5) and all the received radiant energy is supplied to two detector arrangements (8) which are sensitive to radiation in two different atmospheric windows. One of the detector arrangements produces from this the signals for the rectangular thermal-image display in the case of target acquisition, and the other detector arrangement produces the signals for the polar thermal-image display for target tracking of the missile. <IMAGE>
