[Also in Division B8] Carton blanks, formed as shown in Fig. 1, are supplied continuously from a stack and engaged by a mandrel 25 about which they are formed before the mandrel is withdrawn and a pouch 34 containing a food product is inserted, after which cover flaps 11-14 are folded down and sealed. Carton supply.-The blanks, which may be of paperboard, are carried on a pair of chains 40 driven through a reduction gear 50, the front of the stack being supported by pins 41, and a weight 42 holding the rear. The leading carton is bowed outwards by wheels (60), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), for removal by suction cups (63) on a reciprocable frame (64) to retainer bars 85 where it is engaged by the mandrel 25 mounted on endless chains 86. Forming cartons.-Dust flaps 20, 21 on the blank are pre-broken about their score lines as the mandrel moves the blank from the bars 85 and into guide rails (92), Fig. 8 (not shown). Spaced lugs 27 on an endless conveyer 26 engage front and rear walls 8, 10 of the carton as shown at station 3 in Fig. 1. Nozzles 29 apply a glue spot to hold the flaps 20, 21, and arms 102, Fig. 2, rotate to tuck rear dust flaps 19, 22 under a guide rail 31 before glue is applied on the adjacent side walls 9, 7. Rails 32 plough up the side walls, their side flaps 11, 13 being held down by ploughs 33. The mandrel 25 collapses slightly as it withdraws from the carton, Figs. 12-13 (not shown). Filling and sealing.-Inserting the pouches 34 (or 116) is effected manually or automatically at station 7, the pouches being delivered by a conveyer 115. Leading flap 12 is ploughed under a bar 120, the rear flap 14 being folded by co-operating arms (122, 123) operated by cam and gear mechanisms, Figs. 15-18 (not shown). At station 9 closure flaps 11, 13 are turned up by ploughs 138 and glue applied at their edges by nozzles 35 oscillated by cam mechanism. Bars 36 press down the glued flaps, the completed package being transferred from the conveyer 26 to an auxiliary conveyer.
