A travelling crane for use in mines consists of a horizontal beam (3) suspended by bogies (35) from an overhead rail (34). A cylinder which may be either pneumatically or hydraulically operated is mounted at each end of the beam with the piston rods extending to the opposite end. The load is supported from a hook (28) attached to the chain (21) which passes over a pulley (29) and then around a pulley attached to the end of the piston rod of one of the cylinders. A chain at the other end of the beam is similarly connected to the other cylinder. The load attached to the hooks (28) is raised when the pistons are retracted into the cylinders.
