Selecting rye seeds of low alkyl-resorcinol content - by extracting with acetone then reacting extract with east Blue B

Method for selecting nontoxic varieties of rye having a low content of alkylresorcinols (I) comprises first extracting viable seeds with acetone for 15-20 min. without heating. A sample of the extract is then applied to a silica gel plate impregnated with an aq. soln. of Fast blue B. If the resulting colour is not significantly darker than that observed when a wheat seed extract is used instead of a rye extract, the seed is selected. Pref. each seed is extracted with 0.2 ml. acetone and 10 mu l. extract applied to the plate. Individual seeds can be examined and retained for further testing.
