Flame resistant epoxy resins, unsaturated polyesters which combined with monomers containing CH2 = C < groups give polymerizable materials, alkyd resins and saturated polyesters for reaction with diisocyanates to produce cellular foams and surface coatings are prepared from compounds of the formula (Aro)m - R(OH)y wherein Ar is a pentahalophenyl radical, R is a hydrocarbon radical optionally containing an ether linkage, m is a whole number from 1 to 7 and y is a whole number from 2 to 7 (see Group IV(b)). The above polyhydroxy compounds are reacted with such unsaturated acids as maleic acid or anhydrides thereof and combined with such monomers as styrene, vinyl toluene or diallyl phthalate to obtain polymerizable materials or with epihalohydrins such as epichlorhydrin to obtain epoxy resins. In examples: An epoxy resin is obtained by reacting 2-pentachlorophenoxymethyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propane diol with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide and heating the product with p,p1-methylene dianiline as catalyst (III) and the same diol is esterified with maleic anhydride, the product p is mixed with styrene, hydroquinone and benzoyl peroxide and heated to obtain a resin.ALSO:The invention comprises a compound of the formula (ArO)m-R(OH)y wherein Ar is a pentahalophenyl radical, R is a hydrocarbon radical optionally containing an internal ether linkage, m is a whole number from 1 to 7 and y is a whole number from 2 to 7 and a process for the preparation thereof which comprises reacting a hexahalo-benzene and a polyol having the formula R(OH)n wherein R has the meaning given above and n is a whole number equal to the sum of n and y in a proportion of at least n mols of hexahalobenzene per mol of polyol. The products are employed in the preparation of epoxy resins and polyesters (see Group IV (a)). The halogen in the hexahalobenzene may be chlorine, bromine, iodine or fluorine, chlorine being preferred. Polyols specified include trimethylol-ethane-, propane, -hexane and -heptane, 1,2,6-hexanetriol, glycerol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol, di- and tripentaerythritol, dihydroxydurene, ethylene-, diethylene and propylene glycols, hydroquinone, pyrogallol and catechols. The reactants are preferably heated together in the presence of a solvent and hydrogen halide acceptors such as hydroxides and carbonates of sodium, potassium and lithium and pyridine. Solvents specified include dimethoxy-methane and ethane, acetals such as diethyl and dipropyl acetal and amides such as dimethyl and diethyl formamides. Examples I and II relate to the preparation of 2-pentachlorophenoxymethyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propane diol.ALSO:Cellular foams are produced by reacting diisocyanates with saturated polyesters of compounds of the formula (ArO)m-R (OH)y wherein Ar is a pentaholophenyl radical, R is a hydrocarbon radical optionally containing an ether linkage, m is a whole number from 1 to 7 and y is a whole number from 2 to 7 (see Group IV(b)). |
