The t.v. receiver has a flat screen comprising a liq. crystal sheet between two transparent plates. The plates are coated on one side with a polarising layer and on the other with a reflecting layer. The resulting screen is divided into lines by electrodes on both sides. Voltages are applied across the electrodes producing electric fields in the crystal such that points on the screen become transparent or opaque w.r.t. an external source of light.
