1,234,129. Machine tool details. F. MONNIER. 19 Feb., 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 8873/69. Headings B3B and B3T. A machine tool comprises a movable table 2 carrying a set of headstocks 11 having spindles 14 for holding rotating workpieces, the headstocks being brought by movement of the table each to different work stations 30, each work station having a power drive 32, 33 and coupling means for temporarily connecting that drive to a headstock brought to that work station, whereby each headstock takes its drive for the purpose of spindle rotation, from the work station with which it is temporarily associated. The headstocks 11 are mounted on a rotatable turret 2 surrounded by the work stations, but alternatively the headstocks may be moved linearly on a table. The drive for each of the spindles 14 comprises a motor 32 at each operating station which is coupled to a shaft, pulley and belt drive (24), (28), (29), (15) (Fig. 3, not shown) by means of an electromagnetic coupling, after each indexing movement of the turret 2. One half of the electromagnetic coupling (41) is fluid pressure retracted to provide adequate clearance during indexing of the turret 2. Each operating station may include guides and slides for supporting a non-rotatable tool for movement towards a workpieee in the spindle 14. Alternatively an operating station may include a rotary, spindle mounted, tool for operating with a stationary spindle 14. Screw cutting is also possible by advancing the spindle 14 under control of cams or a template. Each headstock 11 includes a lever 19 operated mechanism 21, 22, 18 for operating a chuck on the spindle 14. |
