The spirit level consists of a hollow rectangular box-type housing (1) with a recess (3) and circular slot (4) in which are located conventional bubble gauge inserts. The end sections (19) of the housing are of solid block construction of the same height and width as the rest of the housing. Each block is supported on a pair of parallel dowels which can slide into corresponding sleeves set in plastic blocks (12) set into the ends of the hollow section body of the instrument. The inner ends of the pegs are fitted with stop caps to prevent them being fully withdrawn from the body. The end cheeks can be withdrawn from the ends of the body to extend the overall span of the spirit level to suit the particular application.
