A spring brake operating mechanism has a piston or equivalent part pretensioned in an inactive position against a applied fluid pressure. One or more disc springs are formed from a series of segmented rings. The outer edges of the disc springs are clamped to a rigid retainer, while their inner edges engage the piston. The disc springs are so installed that they exercise an axial force on the piston in the operative condition. The radial inner ends of the segments can be positioned in a circumferential groove of a bush part of the piston.
