The device aims to cut a weft thread as close as possible to the selvedge of the cloth (B) in order to eliminate the need for a subsequent cut. A cutting element (30) is fixed to the back of a comb (10) in a position close to the outermost warp thread, on the side where there is located a mechanism for changing the weft-cop or shuttle. The cutting element (30) comprises a cutting member operating through a pair of teeth of the comb (10) which are adjacent to the outermost warp thread and passing through the plane of the cloth (B). The control device (54) actuates the cutting element (30) after the last stroke of an empty shuttle (26a) and after the first stroke of a full shuttle (26b), as soon as the comb (10) has reached a given end-of-stroke position. <IMAGE>
