Prepn. of mixts. contg. omega-cycloalkyl aliphatic carboxylic acids (I) is carried out by reacting a mixt. of >=2 alicyclic ketones or alcohols having a different no. of ring C atoms with a molten alkali metal hydroxide in 2 successive heating steps, and then converting the resulting alkali metal soaps into the free acids. The 1st heating step is effected at 200-209 degrees C (pref. 235-285 degrees C) and the 2nd at 300-350 degrees C (pref. 310-330 degrees C). Also claimed are the new cpds. 3-cycloheptylpropionic acid (Ia) and 4-cycloheptylbutyric acid (Ib). Cpds. (I) are of use in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
|
