A solid block elastomeric bonding element 5 is interposed between the surfaces 3, 4 of a pair of non-elastomeric thermoplastic elements 1, 2 to be joined by a fusion bond. The heat necessary for fusion bonding is obtained by the incorporation of heat generating particles in the elastomeric bonding element 5. The particles are indirectly heatable by a high frequency alternating magnetic field, established by a coil 7 energized by a high frequency current source 8 and having copper plates 9, 10 affixed thereto, or other suitable field for heating the fusion bonding element 5 to a fusion temperature suitable for producing bonding of the non-elastomeric elements. In a high frequency magnetic field, preferred particles are gamma Fe2O3, Fe3O4 or mixtures thereof. Other specified particles are dielectrically heatable particles, e.g. of halogenated polymers, and infra-red energy heatable particles, e.g. carbon black. Also disclosed is a method of bonding a plastics element to a non-plastics element, e.g. glass, by coating the latter element with a phenoxy resin primer, interposing a film of a thermoplastic block elastomer between the elements and heating the assembly. <IMAGE> |
