The exhaust silencer for an engine has transverse partitions (7, 16) inside its casing creating three resonance chambers (1-3). The inlet pipe (13) buts against the first partition and has an angled outlet. Two off-centre tubes (e.g. 4) connect the first chamber with the third. The tubes are unequal length and they have perforated zones in the walls detuning. The flow from these pipes is reversed by the casing end plate (9) with a perforated baffle (12) in front of it. The flow then passes through a third tube (6) into the middle chamber. Another reversal is effected by the first partition and another perforated baffle (8). The gas is discharged through a centreline pipe (14).
|
