Sterilising oily and aq. fluids with azide biocides - esp. using ethoxylated alkyl azide with surfactant character

(In)organic azides (I) are used as biocides for the long-term sterilisation of waters, esp. oil-contg. waters, including oily liqs., e.g. (a) petroleum and crude oils, and (b) oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions, e.g. cold lubricants and non-inflammable hydraulic fluids. Azides with surfactant character, pref. 3x ethoxylated undecyl-azide, are used partic. to facilitate the handling of oil concentrates and for preparing sterile oil-in-water emulsions. Bactericidal and fungicidal activity of (I) sets in immediately. The microorganisms in oils, oil-in-water emulsions and aq. fluids are destroyed, even during movements of fluids. Clogging of filter devices, screens and narrow conduit passages is prevented. Plastic and metal conduits are not corroded by (I) at alkaline pH. Flow properties of liqs. treated is unchanged. (I) are detoxicated with FeCl3, to form non-toxic complex cpds.
