<p>A solar energy trap comprises a cylindrical mirror which can pivot in a frame parallel to its axis and focus heat onto a coaxial heat or absorbant pipe for circulating a heat transfer fluid. The mirror body is of thermoformed plastic (polystyrene) sheet, pref. having a cellular body of crescent-shaped cross section. The reflective surface is a polished metal foil or a metallised plastic film, having a transparent, weatherproof surface layer of e.g. stabilised butyl methacrylate. The mirror body is counterbalanced so that a low powered motor can maintain the lightweight mirror aligned with the sun. Ancillary mirrors trap stray light at the ends of the reflector.</p> |
