<p>New light valve consists of (a) a cell; (b) method of applying an electric field (EF) to the cell; (c) an electrically responsive liq. suspension in the cell which includes some suspended particles (I) which are responsive to (EF) to change the transmission of radiation through the suspension and (d) a suspending medium which includes a suspended material (II) which acts to maintain the dispersion of (I) in the same condition in the presence or absence of (EF). Inclusion of (II) into the light valve prevents or almost completely retards the agglomeration of the suspended (I) that is known to occur under the influence of an (EF). (II) do not adversely affect the ability of (I) to align when a voltage is applied across the suspension. The valves are suitable for use as windows, windshields, displays and mirrors, etc. In an example, a suspension of quinone bisulphate periodide in MeCO2Ph contg. 1% nitrocellulose did not agglomerate after 2 hr. at 300 volts/10 kilohertz.</p> |
