The machine excavates a hole for a plant and a further one for a supporting stick, comprising parallel augers, one larger than the other, extending downwards from a drive housing. Hydraulic controls move the housing (13) up and down on a support (2). The smaller-dia. auger (18) can be longer than the larger-dia. one (17), and the house can be mounted on the forks of a forklift truck, and levers can be provided for tilting it sideways either way, and locking in position. The housing can be mounted on a slide movable along the horizontal forks under the action of a drive.
