Joining optical waveguide fibre ends - by melting in direct current glow discharge between tungsten electrodes

Optical waveguide fibres are joined together by melting and heat-treating the fibre ends in a direct-current glow discharge. Pref. the appts. has a pair of electrodes, where a pointed positive electrode is employed with a blunt negative electrode; the electrodes are esp. of W. Process gives reliable jointing of fibres or cables, and also effective splicing.
