IC engine with steam injection - has vaporiser to produce steam pressure above that of combustion chamber pressure

The engine works on the four stroke principle and is provided with a water vapour injection system. A branch pipe (24) from the exhaust manifold passes through a high pressure water vaporiser (25) to rejoin the exhaust system via a regulator (28). The regulator responds to water vapour pressure and temp. to by pass the exhaust gases. The water vaporiser consists of a number of vertical water tubes and a steam chamber (33). The water level is monitored by a sensor (35) and maintained by a pump from a storage tank (38). The water is pre heated before entering the vaporiser by a heat exchange coil (40) passing round the engine cylinders (11). The water vapour enters the combustion chamber via a poppett valve (18).
