The tube is wound from a reel (7) onto a mandrel shaft (1) and into a tight gap between two co-axial discs (2, 3). The two discs are mounted co-axially on a shaft and are fixed and demountable. The leading end of the tube (9) is secured to the fixed disc which is then rotated to effect the spiral formation process. The tube traverses two idling rollers (4, 5) en route from the reel to the mandrel, and the demountable disc (3) may be of an open-radially spoked structure. The disc (3) may include a sleeve which is secured to the axle by a nut on an axial threaded stud. The assembly may be mounted rotatably about the axle which projects from a base plate, and the drive-disc may be rotated by hand or through reduction motors.
