Continuous casting ferrous alloys - in mould contg. starter dummy chill with peripheral seal adjusted from outlet end of mould

Continuous casting plant, where molten metal flows from a basin through a pipe into a chilled mould. The pipe is used repeatedly and is not broken after each casting cycle. In the mould is a starter dummy with a chill head possessing a chamfer on its periphery; the chamfer forms a gap increasing the thickness away from the working surface of the chill head. On the chamfer(s) is a material resisting thermal shock and forming a seal between the chill head and the mould walls. The chamfer(s) pref. extend over the entire periphery of the chill head; and the seal is pressed outwards by a frame with a profile to match the chamfers, a screw thread and a nut being used to drive the frame towards the chill head. Used esp. in horizontal or inclined continuous casting.
